Future Job Description

♥♥♥Think of the future; develop a job description for a job you would like to hold.

Whenever I think of my future, I always get this indescribable feeling and mixed emotions. I’ll be nervous, excited, sad and happy. I have reasons for that though.

I always got the vision of myself having a business suit and working in the office or the other way around, traveling around the world. I really had a dream of a good job and a good salary but I can’t really choose what particular job is that. All I want is to succeed in the career I’ll choose.

When I’m in elementary, I thought I would be teacher but only in high school that I discovered I’m don’t suit in the profession of teaching. Since then, I became undecided until our graduation came. Once, the words Information Technology filled my mind. So I came to decide on taking it as a course. With the influence of my parents and my likeness in the study of computers, I really took it.

I never knew studying IT is this hard. It is like journeying a dark path with a bright destination. I really find it hard especially in programming subjects. For two years of studying the course, I came with the positive now, negative later view. I once thought if I am really destined to the course. I only the realized that programming is not the only subject tackled in IT. So, I strived hard until I reach this year. Maybe I’ll just improve my weaknesses and discover my strengths in IT.

Since I’m an IT student and I’m striving to graduate as an IT, of course, I should also have an IT-related course. Honestly, I don’t have definite decision to what particular job it is.

There are so many IT-related jobs out there. Some of these are .Net developers, Project manage, data modeler, Software Implementation Analyst, Database Administrator, IT auditor, help desk, Messaging Administrator, Network Manager, Senior IT auditor, Senior Web Developer and a lot more.

Among the above mentioned IT job titles, I’m getting interested with Data Modeler, Database Administrator, IT auditor and Help Desk.

Data Modeler is considered as aerospace engineers when database administrators are compared to as jet pilots. According to David Van De Voort, principal human capital consultant with Mercer, a consulting firm. "They are in the business of creating data designs, defining relationships between data fields," he says. "They're doing the blueprint for a design which ultimately will get physically built on a machine."

IT auditors test and evaluate IT systems and controls, and make recommendations for improvements.

Help desk. Help desk tier one professionals take initial inquiries and manage simple hardware, software or network problems, while tier two analysts resolve more complex issues, and tier three individuals manage the most difficult challenges that couldn’t be fixed earlier.

Among these four above mentioned interests, my first option is really to be a Database Administrator.

Database Administrator is responsible for installing, backing up, testing, securing and making changes to production databases within an IT environment. They work on ongoing development projects with developers and architects and, increasingly, with business-side workers. They also maintain operations on a day-to-day basis.

Duties

The duties of a database administrator vary and depend on the job description, corporate and Information Technology (IT) policies and the technical features and capabilities of the DBMS being administered. They nearly always include disaster recovery (backups and testing of backups), performance analysis and tuning, data dictionary maintenance, and some database design.

Some of the roles of the DBA may include:

* Installation of new software — It is primarily the job of the DBA to install new versions of DBMS software, application software, and other software related to DBMS administration.

* Configuration of hardware and software with the system administrator — In many cases the system software can only be accessed by the system administrator. .

* Security administration — One of the main duties of the DBA is to monitor and administer DBMS security.

* Data analysis — The DBA will frequently be called on to analyze the data stored in the database and to make recommendations relating to performance and efficiency of that data storage.

* Database design (preliminary) — The DBA is often involved at the preliminary database-design stages.

* Data modeling and optimization — By modeling the data, it is possible to optimize the system layouts to take the most advantage of the I/O subsystem.

* Responsible for the administration of existing enterprise databases and the analysis, design, and creation of new databases.

o Data modeling, database optimization, understanding and implementation of schemas, and the ability to interpret and write complex Structured Query Language (SQL) queries
o Proactively monitor systems for optimum performance and capacity constraints
o Establish standards and best practices for SQL
o Interact with and coach developers in SQL scripting

COMDDAP '09

COMDDAP 2009
(Computer Manufacturers, Distributors and Dealers Association of the Philippines)

COMDDAP 2009... It’s one of the ways on learning Information Technology outside the four corners of the room. Gaining IT knowledge, not in theoretical way but practically, not just ideally but in reality. These words came into my mind as we had at least few moments in COMDDAP 2009.

GETTING IN
On July 2, 2009, we attended the COMDDAP 2009 at the Apo View Hotel. Beforehand, we registered the 1:00-5:00 pm sessions. As we enter the hotel's grand ballroom attaching our student stickers, we immediately are busying ourselves on getting the promotion prints and flyers from the different companies participating the event. The room was filled with the booths of different companies' ride. Even if we are not going to buy, we were still enjoying watching the gadgets and products they exhibit. Some of the names in the head of each booth are indeed well-known. Some of these are the Smart Bro, hp invent, neo, etc. From a ball pen with radio to notebooks and laptops even cameras. All of these can be seen at the exhibition booths. Well, that was not our main purpose though. That’s why we proceed to the session.Jupiter Systems Inc. and ERIC
After we sign our signatures corresponding to our names, the first exhibitor of the nexus group shared about his company. Mr. Celmer Santos talked about Jupiter Systems Inc. and the ERIC (Enterprise Resource Information and Control) DMS. First, he shared a brief history of the said company which says that it is already 24 years in service as an enterprise software company and it’s one of the pioneers of the Enterprise Resource Planning Systems in the Philippines. After that, the exhibitor shared about ERIC DMS. This is a management for financial, personnel, distribution and manufacturing for auto dealerships. The exhibitor opened up the general features, characteristics, process flow and some of the clients of the said DMS. He mentioned “DMS is a complete, end-to-end solution for auto dealerships.” After which, there was a Question and Answer portion which followed by the giving of feedbacks through answering their feedback form. Well, honestly, I can’t answer the form because I can’t relate for I’m only a student. (Computer Manufacturers, Distributors and Dealers Association of the Philippines)

HP INVENT:Thin Client
After the ERIC DMS is the HP invent. I can say that I can relate with this because I’ve already heard of it as a brand for laptops. When Mr. Leonard Zapa said that they are giving away tokens such as T-shirts and USB flash disks, the room was filled with excitement. Take not, the question are just so easy only if you listen to his ideas. All you have to do to get one token is to be the first to raise your hand. Unfortunately, I’m not one of those lucky students to get one.By the way, the exhibitor shared about Thin Client with the words “HP: Think Big; Go Thin” Amazing, right? This means that Thin Client is of small packages but with great benefits like efficient design and longer life span. Thin Client is one of the fastest computer devices. The exhibitor shared about Thin Client and its amazing features. To start with, HP acquired Neoware Inc. on Oct. 1, 2009. Thin Client is a computing device without hard drive (no hard disks). It only uses Flash IDE, Flash storage. It runs applications in remote locations, blade PCs or virtual desktops. It can be used independently, as a task-specific computing device. He also shared about the key growth drivers which are the data security, reliability, easier management, remote PC alternatives and virtualizations. These answer the question, why go on thin Clients? Aside from that, it also is environment friendly and has lower over-all costs. I smiled when he emphasized “lower over-all costs” because it only means that Thin Client is indeed expensive yet worth the cost for its longer life span.Microsoft Dynamics
Another exhibitor talked about Microsoft Dynamics. A Retail Management System which is compared to POS. The title “Microsoft Dynamics” has persuasive subtitle “Success depends on more than one location.” The exhibitor spoke about MS in retail industry leadership as highest in the industry, used by top retailer and that 65% of POS are on Windows which is MS-owned. He also talked about MRMS advantages like streamline operations, improve profit margins, build customer loyalty, manages business, not technology and have a life outside your business. RMS HQ key features are inventory control and tracking, purchase orders, pricing, sales and promotions, sales tracking and powerful, flexible reports. Open Source for Business Applications
The last exhibitor talked about Open Source for Business Applications. At last, I’ve already clarified with the Open Source as distinguished with the Free Software. I heard of the name Mr. Paul de Paula and the terms Joomla and Drupal for the first time. SPINweb Production Inc. is a company that offers web design and development, web hosting and maintenance, online marketing, corporate presentation and Flash 3D Animation. At first, we are asked about whom among us have gone onto web development. Only two had raised their hand because majority of the crowd were merely students. The two were asked to do the things I can’t really relate. In the middle of the session, we were asked to identify the keywords associated with Open Source. They came up with words free, open, contributor and no licensing. However, these words are clarified during the discussion. Open Source is free in the sense of “free speech not beer” or anti-commercial. Also, the exhibitor asked us to identify the icons representing the different open Source applications. Unfortunatey again, of about 20 icons, I was just able to identify ¼ of it. Those icons are Ubuntu, Opne office, Mozilla Firefox, thunderbird, Pidgin, Transmission, Limewire, Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress OS Commerce, Zen Cart, Ruby on Rails, Php Cake and others. It made me realize that even though I’m already three years in the study of Information Technology, I am still but a beginner in the real IT world. Well, it’s okay for me because I know that I’m subject to learn more. Aside from that thought, I also found out that MozillaFirefox, the one that I’m using next to Internet Explorer is indeed an Open Source application. I also heard of the names Eric S. Raymond and Richard Stallman as the founder of the Open Source and Free Software. By the way, Open Source really originates from the Free Software. I also heard about The Cathedral and the Bazaar. The exhibitor also shared the organization that uses Open Source applications. The session was ended with a debate concerning the question “, which is better, the proprietary Software or the Open Source?” And this was answered with a fair thought that Open Source is more advantageous in the other way as Free Software do. To sum up, Open source is good on personal uses while proprietary Software is good in critical missions like the automated elections for its liability. A certain visitor once asked “, what is your opinion on the backing out of TIM its joint venture with the Smartmatic?” The exhibitors can’t answer because according to them, it’s already out of bound.Nexus Group
The one s responsible for the success of the sessions is the Nexus Group. The group comprises the companies such as Nexus, IT ___ and Systems Integrator, Jupiter Systems Inc., Business Software Solutions expert, edupro, IT Training snd Solutions, and the SPINWeb, Online Media Develpoment. These companies have their own websites like www.jupitersystems.com.ph, www.hp.com, www.nexusgroup.ph, www.opensource.org etc.

GETTING OUT
I, with my classmates got out the room with fulfillment that at least, I’ve learned a little in attending the session. Our visist to COMDDAP 2008 would never be complete without taking pictures everywhere in the Apo View Hotel, even inside the CR.

Philippine Automated Elections

Automated Elections
in the Philippines

The Beginning

It’s time for the Philippines to vote electronically. The election in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao last August 11, 2008 marked the beginning of the automated election in the Philippines. Thus used two voting technologies-Direct Recording Electronics (DRE) and (OMR). As the name suggests, DRE uses electronic ballot display that can be activated by the voter, processes data using computer program and transmits voting records electronically. James Jimenez, COMELEC spokesperson, 2008 said “With the new technology, the people of Maguindanao were more motivated to vote than ever before”. The success of the 2008 ARMM election brought the decision to automated system to the 2010 Philippine Presidential election. This is hoped to be a part of the legacy of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. This is also among the four plans of Comelec.

The Companies Who Beat the Bid

Special Bids and Awards Committee (SBAC) called for bidding for the automation project with a Php 11.3 billion budget. The Smartmatic- Total Information Management Corp. joint venture beat several other companies with a bid of only Php 7.21 billion to secure the contract.

The Negative Responses

However, there are disapprovals and allegations with the poll automation. Legislators would block the signing of the contact between the government and the Smartmatic, questioning the identity of the Dutch firm. The Catholic Church, on the other hand, called Comelec to salvage the automation project and considered the Open Election System.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Claudio, presidential adviser for political affairs rejected suggestions that the automated project is used to prolong PGMA’s stay in power.

The Conflict of the Companies

On June 29, TIM, the Filipino company partner of Smartmatic Corporation decided to withdraw from the consortium due to the “irreconcilable differences”. They said Smartmatic will have more control over project operations. Lawyer Boy de Borja said “we should be the last one to do or not to do anything which will undermine every Filpino’s longing for clean and honest election through automation. The 60-40 law is a declaration. There’s a reason for it. We’re supposed to see to it that everything is done right. We have to maske sure that the integrity is absolute and beyond doubt.”

On the other hand, Cesar Flores, Smartmatic’s international sales director called on TIM to set right its shortcomings. He said “We are legally bound by this agreement to incorporate this joint venture.” According to him “TIM is basically complaining against a guideline set by the Comelec itself. It’s a requirement of Comelec in terms of reference that the company with the biggest experience in automation is the one to guarantee technology, software transmission and operation of election. In this case, Smartmatic is indeed, in charge of the operation.”

However, Smartmatic is still open to reconcile with TIM and was still committed to honor the automation contract with Comelec.

Comelec chairman Jose Melo has given the two companies until July 3 to settle their problem and sign the automation contract.

Former Comelec chairman Christian Monsod said the poll body is to be blame if the 2010 automated elections fail to push through, with the Comelec’s broad powers, it can dictate how the bidding and the automation should happen. He urged the Comelec to shun its belief that there is no other way but to stay manual if the automation fails to push through.

Meanwhile, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita got the assurance from Comelec Chairman Melo that the national and local elections will still push through even if plans to automate the voting system don’t materialize. He added that he is confident that Comelec will be able to handle the situation.

The Updates

On July 3, Comelec legal chief Ferdinand Rafanan hinted of a possible reconciliation between Barbados-based Smartmatic International and Filipino company Total Information Corp. (TIM).

"We have been doing so much hard work and prayers. Something good is going to happen," Rafanan said when asked if he has information about the outcome of the overnight meeting between officials from the Smartmatic and TIM.”

While Rafanan refused to confirm that the two companies have already reached an agreement, he said the rift between Smartmatic and TIM was a blessing in disguise.

If the two companies fail to reach an agreement, the poll official said the commission en banc will immediately meet to discuss three top options on how the Comelec should push through with the 2010 elections. Sarmiento said on top of the list is the possible partnership between Comelec and Smartmatic. Rafanan said that if TIM will continue to refuse to fulfil its end of the automation contract on Friday, the Comelec will immediately file charges.

However, at the same day, the tw o companies reconcile and able to thesh up things. Thus, they are back on track.

My Opinion

Everyone is praying for the successful, efficient, honest and credible 2010 elections.

How reliable can the computerized election be? Will it end the cheating, like that of Virgilio Garcillano? Or will just make the false election easier? The answer is already seen in the ARMM election.

The main point of having automated election is its great advantages that overwhelm its disadvantages. Americans once said “Change we need” so are we and this automated elections is part of that change.

Technologies are offered to bring the easiest way possible of our living so as with the election. In automated election or Smartmatic’s electronic voting, the speed of counting ballots is faster and can also provide accessibility for disabled. And the manual can’t offer that. This could also be secure, reliable and auditable. Electronics are the fastest way of recording. The automated election system (AES) proposed using appropriate technology for voting, counting, consolidationg, canvassing, transmission of election results and other processes. With this technology of automated election, it could be a good start of having clean, efficient, and fair election.

Is it reliable? If it’s the fastest and the easiest, the ability to falsify the votes would be clearly observed by the vigilant eyes of the people. If automated could only bring easy fake elections, then why did it succeed in ARMM? Will it end the cheating? Automated elections have the goal to minimize cheating. The poll body should be responsible enough to the credibility of the elections. It’s a shame if the Filipino politicians pay to the foreign company just to falsify the elections.
